Laughter – the elixir of youth
The doctor’s waiting room is crowded as usual. Sitting in a circle around the edges of the room, some trying to be patient are reading the out of date magazines, others are not so polite and voice their annoyance at being kept waiting. Funny how these disgruntled ones influence the mood of the whole room in a negative way.
Suddenly the door swings open and in walks Joy. As she maneuvers her large frame into the room a seat is quickly made available for her. This, out of respect for her 92 years. Using her walking stick for balance, she sits down heavily. No sooner seated and she is chatting to everyone then she starts on the jokes. The mood in the waiting room is dramatically changed as everyone roars with laughter at her jokes, even the ones that are a bit off color.
I worked in this medical clinic and Joy had the same effect on the waiting room mood every time she came to see the doctor about her multitude of medical problems. Joy never complained about any of them, she just kept us all laughing and somehow we forgot our problems too.
Laughter – a century of humor
Television often gives us a glimpse into the life of our centenarians. What is it that they all seem to have in common? A most delightful sense of humor! We take no notice of the inevitable wrinkles, but we see that twinkle of mischief in their eyes and the beautiful smile that lights up their faces. Teeth or no teeth it does not matter, the humor shines through.
Long ago the Bible told us that laughter is medicine. These days there is much evidence to prove this to be true. Some of the stated benefits of laughter are Physical, Mental and Social. Shared laughter increases the bond and strength of relationships in a way that could not be achieved in any other way. Laughter and humor seem to close cultural and language gaps as we laugh with people and not at them, and form a bond where words fall short.
A Quote from Paul E. McGhee, Ph.D.
“Your sense of humor is one of the most powerful tools you have to make certain that your daily mood and emotional state support good health.”
As bloggers, we write and we are a source of influence. We will do well to remember this most powerful tool to support the state of good health for our readers and ourselves. Humor is a tool to enhance the blogger’s lifestyle. Tap into this elixir of youth.
