If you are not aware already – Niume has closed its doors. It was great while it lasted and helped a lot of writers.

Last week I was among those who received an email from the Niume founder.

My writing brief – 1.     An article about super foods that help beat depression, 6 of the top foods that have mental health and anxiety reducing benefits. Please include, how the food can be eaten/instructions on how to cook it/a recipe and the science behind how the food works. Length 500 words.

Depression is a very serious subject

The good thing is that people are now feeling freer to talk about it and if necessary to seek help. In this Niume review, it is good to see Niume is supporting and encouraging discussion about depression.


Here is my submission in response to Niumes invitation to write.

 Depression – Change the food to change the mood  

What a sad picture of a beautiful animal! Obviously, the long-tailed macaque is twice the average weight and probably suffering from sugar addiction. Living in a tourist district, tourists fed it on sweet melons, milkshakes, sweetcorn, noodles, soft drinks and other unhealthy things.

I know what it feels like to have a food addiction, craving controls you, it feels good for a short time and like most addictions, it dumps you into a draggy low energy fuzzy headed type of depression. Break the sugar/refined carbohydrate addiction and the cravings and associated depression stop. Uncle Fatty is now cared for and receiving help.

CBC News reports – A diet high in refined carbs like white bread, snack foods, and sugary soda isn’t just bad for your waistline. New research suggests it could also lead to depression in post-menopausal women.

While there are many causes of depression, it is important to have a strong nutritional foundation. Check out these special foods referred to as super foods.

Turmeric – an ancient spice commonly used in curry. Turmeric and curcumin an active component of turmeric, have been the subject of thousands of studies. A search on PubMed reveals 2676 studies.

University Health News reports on a study- Curcumin Supplements as Natural Antidepressants: Head-to-Head Study vs. Prozac

The outcome of the test was about equal, both produced improvement in the symptoms of depression. Curcumin had no side effects, while Prozac is documented to have side effects ranging from suicidal thoughts to another 81 side effects listed on WebMD.

Other foods for natural emotional health

Turkey meat, its tryptophan content stimulates the body’s natural feel-good chemical serotonin.

All berries, including strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries, are rich in nutrients that can lower stress markers.

Cashew nuts, among other qualities, cashews are rich in zinc.

Low levels of zinc are linked to both anxiety and depression.

Avocado’s the World’s Most Perfect Food benefits for mental health.

Chia Seeds, one of the most popular super foods. They are so beneficial due to being rich in fiber, omega-3 fats, protein, vitamins and minerals. For more information visit Dr. Axe Food is Medicine.

My favorite Chia recipe that includes other super foods.

2 cups of milk, coconut or almond milk.

1 tablespoon of maple syrup.

1/2 cup of chia seeds.

Add choices– 1/2 cup blueberries, raspberries, chopped nuts, chocolate, cinnamon or coffee, the choice is endless.

Combine milk and maple syrup.

Sprinkle the chia seeds on top and mix well.

Add the blueberries or other super food.

Place in the fridge for around 2 hours to set.

Serve with cashew or another nut cream.
